A former high school art teacher is going back to the classroom with a new arts course in the south of the island.
Island-based artist Roger Kent is to begin a series of arts courses, entitled ’...But I Can’t Draw’ at the Hub Community Centre, Port Erin.
The course is designed to unlock the artist within and to help those who have always wanted to learn how to draw and create their own pictures but frequently say that they don’t know how to get started, or even feel that they don’t have the ability to hold a pencil properly.
There will be six classes taking place each Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm, beginning on August 26 and running through to Wednesday, September 30.
’The aim of this "â?¦But I can’t draw"course is to show how pencil marks on a piece of paper can be developed into interesting shapes and textures without having to look or resemble any known object,’ said Roger.
’It is hoped that the work will progress from small beginnings into an elaborate and exciting work of art.
’Those in the "Creative Know" have long appreciated that drawing, painting, stitching, and so has many relaxing and restorative benefits.
’It’s a very accessible way to counteract the negative impacts of stress, bereavement and anxiety, things that many of us go through at the best of times and particularly so recently.’
Roger was formerly the head of art at Castle Rushen High School before retiring in 2010. Since then he has worked on large commissions, ran an art gallery in Castletown and continued to work on his own artwork.
The courses have been backed by the Manx Lottery Trust.
Each session will cost a minimum donation of £3.50 and includes materials and refreshments, with booking essential.
