Douglas will host a Christmas lights switch on this year, albeit with some changes.

Unlike previous years, Douglas Council will not be able to launch late-night shopping with a major light switch on after health and safety chiefs refused to support their plans.

This had led to concerns that the island’s capital may go without a major event to kick off the Christmas season, but not to be deterred, the Council has found a new solution.

The chairman of the regeneration committee, Councillor Stephen Pitts, confirmed to the October meeting of the Council that it would be holding several smaller events.

Mr Pitt, his fellow committee members and council staff, have arranged for six events to be held throughout the capital including a winter wonderland in Villiers Square with free rides and activities for children.

Around the corner on Regent Street, there will be children’s characters handing out sweets while bands and choirs will be invited to perform on Howard Street and a ice-sculpture is planned for Granville Street.

Further down on Castle Street, talks are being held on organising an outdoor cinema with deck-chair seating and snow machines. There are also plans for a street theatre on Duke Street.

However, the true highlight of the night will be in the Strand Shopping Centre where Santa will be setting up his grotto and his elves will have a workshop.

Mr Pitts told the Courier: ’I think it will be a great event, better than ever. By spreading the night all through the town, it will encourage more people to get involved.’

He also encouraged Manx residents to support local businesses this Christmas after what has been a challenging year.

While he was unable to confirm what film will be shown in the outdoor cinema, Mr Pitts said the original Miracle on 34th Street starring Maureen O’Hara and John Payne is a favourite of his.

The evening, on November 19, will be held from 5.30pm to 8.30pm with Mayor Jon Joughin switching on the Christmas lights at 7pm.
