Forty pairs of shoes are to be laid on Douglas Promenade today (Tuesday) to highlight the lives lost by suicide.
They will be placed in front of the War Memorial on Douglas Promenade by Isle of Man Samaritans, in memory of those who have ended their own lives.
Val Culligan, from the Isle of Man branch of Samaritans, said: ’The plan is to lay 40 pairs of shoes just before sunset to raise awareness of the prevalence of suicide, both in the Isle of Man and around the world.
’There will be a piper and drummer to beat out 40 seconds, at which point we will lay the shoes and a candle to accompany each pair until all 40 are placed.
’The statistics say that one person dies around the world every 40 seconds due to suicide and behind every statistic is a life tragically lost.
’Naturally, many people either aren’t aware of the numbers or the reality of the figures doesn’t hit home. We want to raise awareness of this and this display will be a poignant visual representation.’
She said that in the year that marks 40 years since Samaritans had been established in the Isle of Man, it seemed a fitting way to mark the milestone.
’We would like as many members of the public to join us not only to raise awareness of suicide but also the help and support that is available from Samaritans,’ Ms Culligan said.
Other events being held this week to commemorate the anniversary include a private gathering for past and present Samaritans volunteers and a visit to the Mayor’s Parlour.
Samaritans give confidential judgement-free emotional support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The number is 116123 and it is free to call.
