A local, large-scale theatrical production, due to open this weekend in Douglas, has been forced to postpone its run of shows by a week.

The Manx Operatic Society were geared up to open its grand production of the musical ’Sweeney Todd’ at the Gaiety Theatre on Saturday evening, but have been forced to postpone the opening night for a week, due to the ’indisposition of some of some of the principal cast members’.

A statement from the Villa Gaiety said: ’Villa Gaiety have been liaising with the Manx operatic Society, who were due to perform Sweeney Todd at the Gaiety Theatre later this week.

’Unfortunately, due to the indisposition of some of the principal characters in the show, the decision has been made to move the show along by one week.’

This now means that what would have originally been the final night of the show will now instead become the opening night, with the run of shows will commencing on Saturday, March 12, from 7.30pm.

The shows will continue throughout the week, on Monday 14, Tuesday 15, and Thursday 15, with the show coming to an end on Friday, March 18.

The Wednesday show is now cancelled altogether.

Villa Gaiety said that all tickets sold will remain valid for the rescheduled dates, and that refunds are available if requested.

A statement from the Manx Operatic Society said: ’The Villa Gaiety and Manx Operatic would like to apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing you soon.’

Sweeney Todd stars local actor David Artus as the demon barber, with Gemma Varnom as Mrs Lovett.
