The 103rd Ballaugh Children’s Day and Sports’ Day proved so popular that extra races had to organised due to the number of children wanting to take part.

The popular annual event was said to have attracted its best attendance for many years.

Chairman of the Ballaugh children’s day and sports committee John Kermeen said: ’An extra 30 races were held to accommodate all the children in the afternoon. It was the best attendance for some considerable years. The fancy dress competition attracted some excellent entries in all classes and the judges Jenny and Andy Fearn had a hard task choosing the various winners and the overall winner.

’The adult sports followed with keen competition, especially in the cup races and a new trophy, the Ballaneddin Plate, was presented to the winner of the father’s race, Adam Huxham, by the family of the late Brian Le Mare Teare.’

Nine-year-old Finia Done was the winner of the fancy dress competition with her impressive Tynwald Hill outfit.

Winners included; Ballaugh Commissioners Cup for boys 11 to 15 - Daniel Radcliffe, Joan Brew Cup for girls 11 to 15 - Olivia Done, Stanley Cup for boys 10 and under - Harry and Freddie Nicholson jointly, Stanley Cup for girls 10 and under - Ella Radcliffe, Cup for BMX race - Thomas Radcliffe, Queen’s Golden Jubilee Cup for best sports participant - Bella Russell, Scott Murray Goblet for the runner-up - Amy Radcliffe, Plaque for boys 11 to 16 years - Alex Phillips, Plaque for girls 11 to 16 - Erin Kelly, Kinvig Cup for half mile cycle race - Jonathan Field, Kinvig Cup for 440 yards - Adam Huxham, Thomas Sayle Corlett Cup for mother’s race - Sarah Teare-Kermeen, Egg Throwing competition - Phil Teare and Nicky Norris.

Mr Kermeen added: ’The committee would like to thank everyone who kindly helped, donated or supported the day to make it such a great success.

’Special thanks go to St John Ambulance personnel who were in attendance and also the ladies in the results tent for keeping the scores.’
