A student from St Ninian’s High School has won an essay competition.

Thomas Halliwell, aged 17, who wrote an essay on assisted suicide won a £500 voucher priwze and is keen to take on a work experience placement at the company next year.

Simcocks Advocates ran its annual Partnership with Schools initiative for the fourth time this year, featuring an essay competition for sixth form students interested in a career in law.

Sarah Wolter, one of the advocates who marked the essays, said: ’It’s so heartening reading the essays these students have spent valuable time on, seeing all their ideas and getting an insight into the next generation of advocates.

’Congratulations to Thomas on his fantastic essay.’

Students from Ramsey Grammar, Queen Elizabeth II High School, Castle Rushen, St Ninian’s and King William’s College entered following visits from young advocates at the company in February to launch the competition.

They had to respond to one of two questions, including one about the influence Vikings had on the island’s current system of land law and another regarding assisted suicide and whether it should be legalised on the Isle of Man.
