Steam Packet engineers are still trying to repair the Ben-my-Chree’s engine.
The company hopes to bring the ship back in service this evening.
The problem was caused by a failed cylinder head-securing stud on one of the two main engines.
The stud, nearly a metre in length, is one of six per cylinder and has fractured leaving a section deep in the engine block which must be removed prior to a new replacement stud being fitted. The technique to carry out the removal is difficult and time-consuming so a specialist contractor, using specialised equipment, is assisting Steam Packet engineers.
The work will also require the fitting of a new piston and cylinder liner, which is carried in the Steam Packet’s island-based stock to minimise repair time.
Once the stud removal is completed the replacement cylinder head will be fitted, the engine filled with coolant and an engine trial undertaken alongside in Douglas.
Steam Packet chief executive Mark Woodward said: ’We remain hopeful that this evening’s sailing to Heysham will go ahead although there may be a small delay.
’As a contingency, Manannan has been placed on standby for an overnight return crossing to Heysham.
’Freight services are being carried out by MV Arrow, which is currently in Heysham loading and will depart for Douglas at around 2.45pm today.’
