Storm Barra brought winds which touched 80mph when it lashed the island on Tuesday.

The Met Office at Ronaldsway recorded winds of 69mph, which gusted to 80mph, at its observation stations at Douglas and Castletown breakwaters.

Forecaster David Britton added: ’This was therefore touching storm force, but it was only brief and in exposed locations, most other paces were gale to severe gale force.

’Here at the airport, we recorded winds of 44mph, gusting to 70mph.’

The terminal roof at Ronaldsway was one of the buildings damaged around the island by the storm, forcing the airport to shut early. Most flights, however, had already been cancelled because of the winds.

Elsewhere around the island, Civil Defence and Department of Infrastructure teams were called out to around 60 fallen trees and branches on the island’s roads.

Damage was also suffered on the seafronts at Douglas and Ramsey as the strong winds combined with the high tide to damage the sea wall on Mooragh Promenade and the wall that surrounds the sunken gardens on Douglas seafront.

Part of a roof was also pulled off a building in Laxey.

Storm Barra came just over a week after Storm Arwen hit the island on November 26 and 27.

Trees also fell at various locations across the island during Arwen.

Its strongest winds saw a gust of 63mph recorded at the airport, which was the strongest recorded during November.

The statistic was contained within the Met Office’s monthly weather summary which also revealed that it was a drier and slightly warmer November than normal.

After a very wet October, the total rainfall for November measured 62.7mm, only 60% of the November average.

The heaviest rain fell on the last evening of the month with 16.7mm before midnight.

There was 74.3 hours of bright sunshine, 11% more than the long-term mean.

Much of the month was mild with a mean temperature 9.4°C compared to the November average of 8.9°C, but a cold spell in the latter part of the month saw significant wind chill and the first air frost of the season.

The mean wind speed for the month measured 14.8mph compared to the 30-year mean of 16.7mph.

Hail was observed on three days towards the end of the month, there was one sleet shower but no thunder or fog was recorded at the airport.
