Students from Laxey Primary School joined forces with members of the public to give the village’s beach some TLC.
Police officers, representatives of Garff Commissioners, approximately 60 community members and Bill Dale from Beach Buddies joined the primary school students in their initiative to clean up the shoreline.
A total of 193 students went down to the beach, making it the first entire primary school to do a beach clean alongside Beach Buddies.
’We were delighted to see so many people involved with the Beach Buddies clean up on Friday,’ said Rebecca Walker, who teaches year three (ages seven to eight).
’We took the whole school down and, as expected, the children were a credit to us and themselves. Fostering concern for the environment is one of the many ways in which we ensure Laxey learners are compassionate and fit for the future.’
The children had been working alongside Mrs Walker while looking at the environmental issues around Laxey School and within the community. The school recently had Dawn Dickens from the Manx Wildlife Trust running an assembly about single use plastic, identifying it and talking about ways to reduce it.
This led to the children wanting to look at the plastic issue in more depth and to keep the Laxey environment tidy.
After speaking with Mr Dale it was soon realised that Laxey was one of the last busy beaches in the island without a Beach Buddies bin.
Therefore the students made the community event, designing posters to go in the windows of Laxey businesses and using hashtags #LookAfterLaxey and #LaxeySchoolCares.
They have now raised enough donations to fully fund a bin.
