A travel agency boss says his industry isn’t likely to get back to normal for a while.

Jan Wozniak, the owner of Freedom Travel, based on Strand Street in Douglas, says that the Covid-19 pandemic has posed challenges for everyone in travel and tourism, especially based here.

There are tight rules at the UK/Isle of Man border.

The Manx government have said residents should only travel off-island for absolutely essential reasons.

All those arriving on-island are required by law to be in possession of an entry permission, to be completed within 48 hours of an individual’s scheduled arrival. Indviduals must isolate for 14 days from arrival and it’s recommended to take a Covid test on day one, seven and 13.

In terms of tourism on a global scale, Mr Wozniak said: ’The importance of co-ordination and harmonisation of Covid-19 measures is one of the key messages to look at ways to restart global tourism in the coming year.

’With infection rates rising rapidly, it may not be until spring that we start to see a real easing of travel restrictions, which means travel corridors and a quarantine period are likely to be here to stay.

’The UK Government still seems reluctant to support airport testing as a way of getting rid of quarantine completely, despite a growing list of airlines and airports introducing their own initiatives.’

Throughout lockdown, Freedom Travel has been assisting clients with their travel needs and the deferring of their 2020 travel bookings.

Mr Wozniak said: ’Our concern is what will happen to future holiday prices and availability. When the bookings start, particularly with the deferred 2020 bookings and the lower level of business travel, it may force some airlines to push up the leisure fares.’

Mr Wozniak said he has seen an increase in on-island holiday inquiries, including TT visits.

’We have seen much improvement in travel enquiries and we believe this to be out customers’ confidence of sunny days ahead. We must not be put off by what’s happening.’
