The charity Victim Support is reporting a rise in referrals this year.

It says that since the government declared its community Covid-free status on June 15, which included an end to social distancing and a return back to offices for many, the charity has seen a ’sharp upsurge’ in referrals and contacts with increased pressure on its services.

Latest statistics from the charity reveal that in the three-month period from June to September 2020, referrals were up 85% and contacts were up 91% compared to previous three months.

In addition, domestic abuse cases were up 72% compared with the same period in 2019.

Paula Gelling, manager of Victim Support, said: ’It’s been an incredibly tough year for so many people and it’s concerning to see the number of referrals and contacts increasing, particularly in the areas of domestic and sexual abuse.

’Despite having to cope with Covid restrictions and under increased pressure, we have worked incredibly hard to meet the demands and ensure the charity continues to support those in need. I would like to thank the team, volunteers, fundraisers, board members and donors for all their support and efforts this year which has been a year like no other.’

This year was also Victim Support Isle of Man’s 21st anniversary.

Several events and celebrations were cancelled, but an online campaign resulted in the charity raising more than £14,000 from the public and corporate donations during lockdown.

In addition, the charity has invested in a refurbishment of its premises in Douglas on Albert Street.

The charity is also making the premises wheelchair accessible.

The organisation won the ’charity of the year’ title from the Little Piece of Hope, a Manx children’s independent charity, helping children who need help with mental and physical disabilities at home, with funding and support.
