An Easter surprise was delivered specially for housebound users of the Mobile Library service.

Volunteers of the Isle of Man Family Library Mobile Service dropped off more than their usual books and CDs this month to the homes of 70 library users.

Baskets of goodies greeted the members, which were filled with chocolate muffins, cheese, butter and biscuits sponsored by businesses across the island.

The Easter-themed hampers were an added boost for those who are unable to get to a library.

Sally Hardman, librarian in charge of the Mobile Library, said: ’It was such a welcome surprise for so many people to receive Easter hampers alongside the regular supply of books and CDs.

’It is widely known there’s an ageing population in the island and 70 of our members live alone in their own homes and are unable to access our larger Mobile Library.

’Because of this we make a personal visit every month and were delighted to work with local retail stores to deliver some Easter fare on our Home Library Service rounds.

’A big thank you to Robinson’s, the Creamery, JAC Stores and Tesco for supporting this initiative. The companies who have partnered with us have helped make a real difference.’

The Mobile Library visits those who are isolated through location or mobility.

It runs Bibliotherapy sessions for groups, which promote good mental health through sociability with adult picture books and memorabilia. It offers ’playaway’ devices, which are digital recordings of books into a pocket-sized device and audio books for the visually impaired.

The team makes more than 130 one-to-one visits a month to individuals and is always looking for new members to join.

Easter activities have been run at the Family Library in Westmoreland Road, Douglas, with the Mad Hare Hair Family.
