The Vicar of St Peter’s in Onchan, who was suspended from his office last month, has resigned.
It is understood that Clive Burgess was suspended over an error of judgment involving allegations that he sent inappropriate text messages to a young woman.
In a statement, the Diocese of Sodor and Man said: ’The Reverend Canon Clive Burgess has resigned from his position as Vicar of Onchan and Canon of St German’s Cathedral with effect from October 15, 2019.’
The married vicar was suspended in early July. A spokesman for the Diocese said at the time that this was a ’neutral act’, and should not be taken to imply any wrongdoing.
He urged the public not to speculate on the reason for Canon Burgess’ suspension.
During the period of suspension, Rev Burgess could not carry out any duties of the office of priest without the Bishop’s permission.
It is understood the allegations of inappropriate messages date back some time but were brought to the attention of the diocese more recently when Rev Burgess was giving a safeguarding course.
Revd Alessandra di Chiara has taken over at St Peter’s.
