Douglas councillors agree that the annual Christmas lights switch-on, which signals the start of late-night shopping, needs a new home.

But they can’t agree on where that should be.

Concerns were raised at the June meeting of the council that the current proposed location on the North Quay would be too cold.

Last year’s location in front of the town hall is no longer deemed acceptable by health and safety specialists because of overcrowding in a confined area.

Council leader David Christian has suggested that the council should look at using the new culture zone, which is due to be created outside the Gaiety Theatre.

However members were divided about whether the location was right.
