Local historian Peter Kelly will take the audience on a tour of the war memorials erected across the island following the end of the First World War in a talk taking place the Manx Museum.

The presentation is the 29th annual joint lecture of the Isle of Man Victorian Society and Manx National Heritage.

The event, entitled ’We will remember them - the art of the Great War memorials’ takes place at the Douglas Museum on Saturday (November 3).

A spokesman for the Isle of Man Victorian Society said: ’ Local historian, Peter Kelly, still remembered for his epic talk on the White City funfair a couple of years ago which was given on three successive Saturdays to a total audience of 600, is taking his audience on a tour of the war memorials erected across the island following the end of the Great War.

’Many were parish memorials by the roadside, some were in churches, a number were designed by Archibald Knox, others by historians or monumental masons.’

The spokesman said that many facts not previously known will come to light during the informative talk.

In his presentation, Mr Kelly will look at the style and differing designs of each memorial ranging from Celtic to futuristic.

The talk takes place at the Manx Museum lecture theatre. Doors open at 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Admission is free.
