A talk about artefacts relating to Captain John Quilliam and some of his seafaring contemporaries is the next in the Trafalgar Day series of lectures in Arbory Church, in Ballabeg, at 7.45 pm, on Thursday, October 24.

The lecture series celebrates Arbory parish’s unique link to the Battle of Trafalgar through former resident John Quilliam, who steered Nelson’s flagship in the conflict.

Manx National Heritage curator of Social History Matthew Richardson will talk about the artefacts which are held in the collections of MNH, and which have recently gone on show in the new Mann at War gallery at the Manx Museum, in Douglas.

He will discuss the history of the items known to have belonged to Quilliam, and how and when they came to be in the collections of the museum.

Of particular interest is Quilliam’s uniform, which underwent professional conservation treatment before going on display.

Free admission is by ticket only from Bridge Bookshops in Port Erin and Ramsey, and from Mike Berry (824550), or Phil Smith (832146/495146).

Alternatively, contact Dave Handscombe at: [email protected]. Arrive at 7.15pm to ensure parking, enjoy the live music and a warm-up prize quiz.

Refreshments and complimentary rum follow the lecture, with a raffle and opportunity to view the model.
