This weekend sees the release of a new EP from local ambient rock band The Clown Calls For War.

The three-piece group, featuring singer and bassist Andrew Clucas, guitarist Brook Wassell and drummer Lee Stevens will unveil their five-track EP ’Sacrifice For Purity’ at a launch gig at Compton Vaults, Castletown, tonight (Friday) from 9pm.

Featuring the songs ’Beauty Torments The Mind And Corrupts The Soul’, ’Juggling Wolves’, ’Between The Flash And The Bang’, ’Murder Under Moonlight’ and the title track, ’A Sacrifice For Purity’, the band describe it as being inspired by a mix of their various musical influences, personal observances and a potential disaster.

’"Sacrifice For Purity" contains our usual mix of dynamic, soaring, ambient post-rock, with tracks taking inspiration from modern ideas of beauty, equality and politics,’ said Andrew.

’And in one instance, from when we forgot to unplug a PA system during a lightning storm.

’The tracks were largely written during 2018 and with most tracks being instrumental, they are usually a reflection of our collective mood and outlook on the world.

’This, we think, tends to explain our often bright and optimistic melodies interspersed with dirty and angular backdrops or interludes.’

Lyrically this EP has taken inspiration from the huge changes in social attitudes and rigid trench warfare of modern politics.

’We have recorded the EP ourselves over the course of 2019, which has been a fairly drawn out affair,’ he continued.

’This time, not just because of our everyday commitments to our day jobs and families, 2019 saw us hit a few low points, which hindered our commitment to the recording process and our ability to get out and gig.

’Thankfully we seem to be past the worst of this now and we’re looking forward to getting out and gigging more in 2020, and to start the recording of our next EP.

’We’re very proud of the latest batch of tracks that we’ve written, some of which will start to appear in our set from Friday.

’They were written during our turbulent 2019, and we think, perhaps, some of the new songs reflect our more inward looking year, as opposed to our usual look to the wider world.’

’Sacrifice For Purity’ features cover art by Isle of Man-based artist Jonny Graham, and is available via the ’Clown Calls for War’ Bandcamp page or via any of the major music streaming services.
