Perhaps there has never been a better time to present a political comedy.
Manx drama society, the Service Players, have recreated the classic TV comedy ’Yes, Prime Minister’, and will present three episodes at the Gaiety Theatre over three nights next weekend.
Following on from their previous shows, where they have re-staged live versions of well known and familiar TV sitcoms, the Service Players will perform three episodes of the satirical TV comedy, ’The National Education System’, ’The Key’ and ’A Real Partnership’.
Manx Radio newsreader, and long-serving member of the Service players, Howard Caine will take on the iconic role of the hapless and easily-led Prime Minister, Jim Hacker, made famous by Paul Eddington in the famous BBC series.
He will be joined by the multi award-winning actor Nigel Harrison, appearing in his third role with the Service Players as the scheming, machiavellian civil servant, Sir Humphrey Appleby, the character made famous by Nigel Hawthorne.
Karl Boveniser will complete the trio as Hacker’s long-suffering private secretary, Bernard Woolley.
The society welcomes a new member, Jenny Quirk, in the role as the Prime Minister’s adviser, Dorothy Wainwright.
Jenny is no stranger to the stage, having performed before with the Manx Gilbert & Sullivan, and Inspirations Theatre Company in Peel.
Alex Brindley returns as the director, making this his seventh directing project with the society, having already presented successful adaptations, including ’Blackadder Goes Forth’, ’’Allo ’Allo!’, ’Fawlty Towers’, ’The Vicar of Dibley’ and last year’s ’Dad’s Army’
’The Service Players are such a great group of people to work with, and we’ve had enormous fun rehearsing for this hilarious show,’ said Alex.
’It’s certain to be a great night’s entertainment.’
’Yes Prime Minster opens on Thursday, November 8, and runs for three nights until Saturday, November 10, with the show starting at 7.30pm.
