Mogwai
As the Love Continues
This is very much a landmark release for the band; it’s their tenth studio album and comes out 25 years to the day since their first single did.
Over that quarter-century they’ve evolved from loud/quiet/very loud post-rockers heavily indebted to Slint, to a group with a much broader sonic palate.
Influences from the past decade or so of their career, such as the rhythms and synths of ’70s German experimental music, film soundtracks and post-punk are very much to the fore, but filtered through Mogwai’s own strong style and sense of dynamics.
Once again, this album represents not a revolution in, or radical rethinking of their sound, so much as an ongoing refinement of it.
’As the Love Continues’ should please long-standing fans, whilst also acting as a fine introduction for anyone looking to find a way into Mogwai’s stellar back catalogue.
Sound Pick:
Tom Misch
Geography
After being out of print for a while, Tom Misch’s debut album is back on vinyl.
With stellar collaborations involving Loyle Carner and De La Soul; Misch is able to deliver an impressive balance of jazzy beats with a modern pop sound, whilst all together showcasing some of his impressive guitar work throughout.
After developing from a bedroom producer, his first full length album shows his progression well by fusing a range of genres to create this delightfully pleasant 90-minute easy listen.
The album smoothly sinks into the song ’Lost in Paris’; a lovely groove that he wrote about losing a hard drive full of music when he was in Paris.
Songs such as ’Disco Yes’ lift us through with its funky rhythms, whilst ’Water Baby’ really stands out with its production and hip-hop influence, delivering the message of maintaining your peace of mind through tough times.
