Our 32-mile island offers great geographical diversity, with each town and village having its own unique character.

We asked people which part of it they would most like to live in.

Alison Wilson, 66, from Ballaugh, says she would always like to be situated up north.

’The east coast weather I think is [better] - because we get that west wind - so that’s the reason why I’d say [being near] Ramsey. And I like the shopping there.’

Tina Grant, 66, Douglas, says she is happy there, having moved six years ago.

In particular, she likes the view overlooking the bay.

If given the chance however, Alison said she would like to live in Port Erin.

’Or Maughold, the view is just wonderful there,’ she added.

’And you can still get to a pub.’

As for where she would least like to live, she said: ’Foxdale.’

’Why? Because every time you go down to the airport [through there] it’s grey and raining.’

Having moved here relatively recently, Tina added she couldn’t say for sure - ’At the moment - I’m still exploring,’ she said.

Conor Caley, 22, from Castletown, said he preferred living there out of anywhere else, because of the sea views and the ability to head into town whenever he wanted.

’There’s a nice balance of [feeling like you’re] out of town, but there’s still enough stuff to do in Castletown without going too far from home,’ Conor told us.

Alex McLaughlin, 23, from Douglas, agreed that if not there, he’d rather live down south as well: ’It’s just beautiful down there really, isn’t it? That’s the main thing,’ he said.

Asked where he would least like to live, Alex said: ’It’s the Isle of Man. There’s nowhere that I’d be abhorrently against living.’

When we put that question to Conor, he said: ’I think the main thing is just bus routes and access.

’Like if you’re up in Bride you haven’t got access to as many places.’

Teresa Mellor, 57, Peel, said that out of anywhere in the island, that’s where she’d want to be.

Asked why, she said: ’You can go on long walks in Peel, and you’re not far from anything. Whereas Douglas [where she’d least like to live], it’s just streets and houses isn’t it?’

Lisa Mellor, 24, agreed that Douglas was too busy for her as well, and that she was happy to live in Peel.

Teresa added: ’[Douglas] prom’s nice, but I don’t think I’ve actually ever been on that beach - it just doesn’t appeal to us.’

Anne Hepworth, 77, and her husband Peter, 78, both agreed they were living in their ideal location, in Santon.

’Where our house is, you can see the sea, you can see the planes coming in, and you can see the railway station and you open the curtains and all you can see is Langness,’ Anne explained.

Asked why they liked Santon so much, Peter said ’Simply the fact the house is nearly finished!’

They agreed that there isn’t anywhere in the island they wouldn’t live, but Peter said he preferred the countryside to somewhere like an estate, unless it was like Tromode, where they had lived.
