For a night that promised a couple of show stoppers, this show was absolutely full of them.
Hosted by the talented young singer Alexandra Slater, the second Greatest Variety show featured one terrific set piece after another, performed by a cast packed with local stars of the stage, both young and old.
From the stirring opening songs, a medley of Queen hits ’The Show Must Go On’ and ’Who Wants to Live Forever’, sung by Sue Tummon, Matt Creer, David Artus, Mike Bonner, Dani Bridson and Alexandra herself, through to a rousing version of ’Nessun Dorma’, the crowd were moved from their chairs more than once in applause.
Among the many highlights was a version of ’Baker Street’, with saxophonist Chris Sullivan accompanying Mike Bonner, Paul Costain singing ’Old Man River’ some entertaining dance routines from Stage One, a charming group who called themselves the Little Kids, the Trinity Irish School of Dance and a thrilling Egyptian-themed show from Asteria.
Music teacher Dani Bridson sang with Malcolm Stitt and David Kilgallon and led the Ballakermeen School choir before singing a powerful version of the song ’I’ll Never Love Again’.
David Artus gave several terrific performances, the stand-out one being an over-the-top rendition of ’You’ll Be Back’, dressed as King George III, taken from the musical ’Hamilton’.
The night did belong to Alexandra, who went through several costume changes, and delivered one jaw-dropping performance after another.
She was joined by eight-year-old singer Anna Tramantova for a sweet version of ’A Million Dreams’, sung a perfect version of ’Barcelona’ with Matt Creer and gave quiet an astonishing and spine chilling rendition of ’The Phantom of the Opera’, with David Artus reprising the role he excelled in on the Gaiety stage in 2014.
