A third candidate has come forward to stand for the Legislative Council.

Alan Wright, of Peel, is a former police officer who has worked as a registration officer in the Land Registry since 2011.

He joins advocate and human rights specialist Paul Beckett and lawyer Jane Poole-Wilson as candidates nominated for the LegCo vacancy created by the retirement of Tony Wild.

Closing date for nomination is May 5 and the election will take place on May 18.

Mr Wright has been nominated by Glenfaba and Peel MHK Geoffrey Boot and seconded by constituency colleague Ray Harmer. He is supported by MHKs Tim Baker and Graham Cregeen.

Born in London, he moved to the island in 1968 when his parents settled in Ramsey. He joined the police in 1978 and served with the force for more than 25 years in all areas of the island, finishing his career in Onchan.

After leaving the police in 2003 he started his own business as a health and safety and environmental consultant before becoming a civil servant in the Land and Deeds Registry.

He has served on the executive committee of the Prospect union for two years.

Mr Wright, who moved to Peel in 1981, has two grown-up children and is a keen supporter of Peel Football Club.

Members of Legislative Council are lawmakers.
