For this week’s Word on the Street we asked the public what they think of the new roundabout, called a ’roundel’ on Douglas prom, and if they would know how to approach it.
Early last week, the new roundabout consisting of an oval crop of painted circles was unveiled for the first time at the bottom of Broadway.
The Department of Infrastructure issued a statement explaining it’s supposed to be treated as a normal roundabout.
Ali and Dave Ward, of Douglas, understood the concept but described the roundel as ’pointless’.
Dave, 53, said: ’I think what’s concerning is the seemingly lack of consultations and just the opinion that everyone will get used to it and just shut up about it, I think that’s really dismissive from the government.’
Ali, 50, added: ’It’s a bit large and a bit ridiculous, it doesn’t add anything for the prom, it just seems a bit pointless.
’I think it’ll cause chaos in TT week.’
Ali explained their son works at the family library and they were trying to raise money to save it after it was announced it would be shutting.
’They’re shutting the family library, they won’t support that but they’ll pay an extra however million for a roundabout,’ she continued.
She also didn’t understand why the DoI hadn’t opted for the usual style of roundabout.
She said: ’What’s wrong with a roundabout with a few flowers on it? It’s lovely.’
’There’s a reason they’re still around,’ Dave added.
Val Jones and Sue Marchbank, both from Douglas, were confused by the layout of the roundabout.
Sue, 52, said: ’I think the one who made the decision on that needs to be sacked.
’I think they’ve wasted money but then again the whole prom’s a waste of money.
’It’s pathetic, it’s not a roundabout, it’s only going to cause more confusion and possibly accidents.’
Val, 75, said: ’Do you go round it? I haven’t been down the prom in the car since they started doing it, it’s like a maze.’
Sue added: ’She wouldn’t use that, she would avoid it like the plague.’
Val was also concerned about TT next year.
’What’s going to happen when we get TT back and we have all the bikes?’ she asked.
Sue replied: ’It’ll confuse them as much as it does us, I think it’s absolutely pathetic.’
Michelle Bowen, of Greeba, explained this wasn’t a surprise to her.
She said: ’It’s an absolute disgrace which we’re paying for.
’The whole of the prom is a disgrace, the fact that it’s taken three years, the fact they’ve had to dig it up four times because none of the services work together is a disgrace.’
The 60-year-old continued: ’They just keep digging it up and I’d say that’s a tragedy.’
Lucas Johnson, from Douglas, didn’t understand how the public are supposed to tackle the roundel.
The 24-year-old said: ’It is confusing.
’When you look at it, what is it really at first glance? Is it a roundabout or is it a bunch of circles?
’Which circle do you go in? Do you go on the outside, do you go on the inside?
’I do wonder if they’ll have to alter the training on the driving lessons for this.’
He felt they should have ’just done a normal’ roundabout.
Another roundel is to be painted on the Church Road Marina junction near the Sefton.
