A Manx soprano singer, whose voice was admired by thousands of island residents, has died aged 98.
Born in Douglas, Eileen Peters rose to prominance in the 1940s and 1950s for her musical talents.
From a young age, Ms Peters took part in numerous performances and would often sing at the Gaiety Theatre.
Her daughter, Gill Brown, remembers the excitement that her mother’s singing, acting and dancing used to bring.
’The Gaeity Theatre was always packed when she performed,’ she said.
’Buses were always busy trying to get people to the theatre.
’The shows were more brilliant back then because not everyone had television.
’And she was fabulous! I remember thinking "there’s my mum on the stage!" I was very proud of her,’ she explained.
The singer was awarded a number of prizes for her musical efforts, including the prestigous Cleveland Medal at the Manx Guild in 1950 and the Blackpool Rose Bowl in England.
’She was also on the BBC show "Top Town", which was a musical variety TV show with local artists who would go around different towns in the UK to compete,’ the late star’s daughter added.
’And she became friends with Jon Pertwee, from Doctor Who, who was stationed here during the war.
They worked together on the Service Players productions.’
Gill and her sister-in-law, Audrey Brown, claim Eileen Peters as the most ’stylish’ women they knew.
’Most people remember her as being very glamorous and for her singing,’ Gill said.
’She was a terrific and fantastic woman.’
Audrey continued: ’She used to model for me at my fashion show.
’It was very hard because she always looked better than us!
’She’d be in a bikini at the age of 60 and still look fabulous,’ she laughed.
Ms Peters’ married three times: Wilfred Brown, Alfred Robertson and Reg Armstrong. Ms Peters’ funeral service took place yesterday (Wednesday). She leaves daughter Gill, son Ian Brown, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
