Former Deemster Jack Corrin has died.
Mr Corrin was called to the Manx bar in 1954.He served as Attorney General from 1974 to 1980, when he became Second Deemster. He took over as First Deemster in 1988, serving until 1998.
He was given the Tynwald Honour in 2012.
Mr Corrin helped many charitable causes, among others, the Douglas Buxton Music Trust, the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s Families Association, the Manx Asthma Association, Crossroads Caring for Carers, the Alcohol Advisory Council, the Manx Housing Trust and the Manx Blind Welfare Society.
In 1995, he was awarded the CBE in recognition of his years of public service to the island, and in 1998 he was made a Freeman of the Borough of Douglas.
Tim Swift, president of the Law Society, said: ’I have learned with great regret of the death of Mr John William Corrin, known as Jack, and wish to express on behalf of the legal profession of the Isle of Man our deepest synpathies to his daughter, relatives and friends on his sad loss.
’He was a renowned advocate, becoming a partner in the firm of Dickinson Cruickshank and in 1974 he became Attorney General.
’In 1980 he became a Deemster and in 1988 First Deemster. He was much respected and popular among his legal colleagues and peers.
’Outside the law he and his late wife, Pat, demonstrated a selfless commitment to charitable work.
’I wish to express our appreciation of his distinguished contribution to the Isle of Man. I know that he will be greatly missed.’
