Why have one tin bath race when you can have two, say event organisers.
The Castletown Ale Drinkers Society (CADS) has joined forces with Ramsey Rugby Club to provide a mini version of its famous tin bath and snake races at Mooragh Park in Ramsey next month.
This will be the second year in a row that the Ramsey races have taken place following a trial last year.
’It worked really well, so we thought we’d do it again,’ said CADS chairman Chris Callow.
The northern event is aimed more at the sporting community with rugby and hockey teams battling it out to see who’s fastest.
It was clearly a hit last year as all slots have been booked up, with a total of 20 teams having entered.
The society held tin bath races at CarFest in Cheshire, which is hosted by English television presenter Chris Evans, in 2017 and 2018.
Then last year they decided to take the action of the annual World Tin Bath Championships, held in Castletown harbour, to the north of the island too.
Mr Callow said: ’We get a few hundred competitors in Castletown. It’s a big thing and we want to expand it further.’
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the society had not cancelled the island events.
Mr Callow said the races will give residents something to look forward to after many significant events were postponed or cancelled in the Isle of Man due to the virus.
’The races will be a good excuse to have a pint and raise money for charity,’ he said.
The Ramsey event will take place on July 25 at 2pm. Each team has a total of six members for the snake race as they will sit inside six inner tubes strung together and paddle backwards to a finish line. All money raised is going to local charity. The Castletown event will take place on August 22 from 2.30pm. It will be marking its 49th year.
