Tynwald president Steve Rodan says he is ’honoured and delighted’ to receive the OBE.

He is one of four people in the island to be named in the Queen’s birthday honours list - the others being fund-raiser Tony Fox, Manx Aviation and Military Museum founder Ivor Ramsden and Tonia Lushington, head of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association.

Glasgow-born Mr Rodan first came to the island in the 1980s, and soon immersed himself in Mann’s historic, cultural, charitable and political life.

A pharmacist in Laxey, he was a village commissioner there from 1991 until his election as MHK for Garff in 1995. He retained that seat in 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011 before his election as president and elevation to LegCo in 2016.

He is also county chairman of the Royal British Legion and has been honoured the OBE for outstanding service and dedication to the Isle of Man.

He said: ’This is something wholly unexpected and I am both honoured and delighted, especially for my family.

’I always say public service is its own reward already. It’s been a great privilege to serve in Tynwald. Tynwald is an institution whose proper functioning is so essential to the well-being of the Isle of Man.

’But this is a proud moment and I feel most grateful.

Mr Rodan said he had been notifed of his OBE a few weeks ago by the Lieutenant Governor but he has had to keep the new under wraps since then.

He said: ’We should be used in politics to keeping confidences. That’s the theory! My wife has kept the secret.’

He said he believed the ceremony will take place in the autumn at Buckingham Palace. Mr Rodan has been to the Palace before, having attended the Queen’s garden party there a number of years ago.

Tony Fox, of Union Mills, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for his charity fundraising over the past 40 years.

He has raised funds for many good causes, including local Manx charities, Coronary Care at both Noble’s Hospital and Broad Green in Liverpool, and Robert Owen House. Most significantly, he has raised more than £100,000 for the Liver Unit at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in memory of his wife Ann.

Ivor Ramsden receives an MBE for services to Manx heritage and tourism.

For over 25 years, Ivor has made an outstanding contribution to the social and military history of Manx people by establishing, in his spare time, the Manx Aviation and Military Museum.

Tonia Lushington is also awarded the MBE.

As secretary general of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association for over 10 years, Tonia guided the Association through a raft of financial and other complex challenges.

She was also chef de mission for Manx teams competing in Delhi and Glasgow and for youth teams attending the Games in Pune and Samoa.

Tonia has been at the heart of much of the Association’s fundraising activity and her support to Manx charitable and sporting sectors spans five decades, as an administrator and as a competitor.
