They are designed to make it more ’user friendly’.
The work, which is currently being undertaken in the Crosby and St John’s junctions, aims to improve the condition of the popular path and make it accessible for all pedestrians, including those with wheelchairs.
The trail, which is on the old Peel to Douglas railway line, will be closed in a series of sections throughout the summer while government workers make the improvements. This began on April 30.
As part of the work, majority of the route will be resurfaced using recycled quarry material, trees will be cut back, new cycle-friendly bridges will be built and obstacles erected to slow bicycles down.
Ditching work will also be done to ensure that water will run off the path effectively.
Work has already been carried out at the entrance of Peel.
The department says it will provide updates about how the work is going throughout the 26 weeks it is anticipated the project will last.
