A new grandstand at Hillberry will replace the slightly ramshackle structure that dated back to the early post war years and had recently become too unsafe to carry on using.

However, the landowner has now teamed up with Duke Marketing to retain a grandstand in that location.

Peter Duke said his company planned to enhance the visitor experience and was pleased to have a hand in providing the facility at such a popular viewing spot.

The new stand will have the advantage of a covered area with proper seats. There will also be free wifi, catering, better toilets and parking.

A spokesman said the old grandstand would need to have been completely rebuilt to meet the required safety standards and had now been removed altogether.

This year, the Southern 100 Club will be loaning its own mobile grandstand for use at the site and this will be in situ and ready to use from the Tuesday of practice week to the end of race week.

The popular viewing spot attracts hundreds of spectators every year who often sit on the grass and line the road stretching almost as far as Brandish.

Spectators using the new grandstand will have a view stretching from the left-hand bend at Brandish right down and through the 140mph right-hander at Hillberry.

Some will even be able to see competitors rounding the corner at Kate’s Cottage, almost a mile away as they start the descent from the mountain section of the course.

This will be the fourth official temporary grandstand, along with the two at Noble’s Park and the one at Creg-ny-Baa.

Grandstand tickets at Hillberry, Onchan, will cost spectators £30 for Senior and Superbike race days at this year’s TT.

Ticket prices for the stand start from £3 on practice days and are available from the official iomtt.com website.
