Vandals have destroyed facilities at a children’s sports club, causing damage valued at more than £600.
Onchan Juniors AFC said that some time last week, a toilet block’s door lock was smashed and facilities inside were smashed.
David Quirk from the football club said: ’I arrived at 10am on Wednesday [February 17] and some idiot has smashed the toilets and the urinals.
’It’s gonna cost probably about £600. The annoying thing is that we’re setting-up for Easter. As we get back into the field, we have about 200 kids who play football for Onchan, spread between ages from six to 16. We haven’t got that much money [as a club] and arriving to find this, our work has just gone down the pan.’
Mr Quirk said the container was donated to the club and had still been working on it before the damage was done.
He said: ’We were intending to get CCTV installed but obviously there’s a cost involved and we want to build a club house here.
’We finally got past all the hurdles from planning, but with the pandemic hitting us two years in a row, we haven’t been able to get back on site. With the TT not happening this year, we’ll be able to strive forward.
’What’s disappointing to me is the fact that it’s affecting and hurting all of the kids who play in the club and come from other areas across the island to play. We need all of these facilities up and running as we can’t leave the island currently,’ he added.
A black pair of North Face gloves were left at the scene, which Mr Quirk said may or may not belong to someone involved in the crime.
Onchan AFC are appealing to parents of children who play at the club, or anyone else who may have more information about the vandalism. Mr Quirk’s number is 429808.
