The attraction of bringing ’Vladimir’s Viennese Christmas’ to the Island was the magnificent Villa Marina.

Principal Vladimir Jablokov had visited it earlier this year to accompany Katherine Jenkins.

He’d had a desire to return to the Royal Hall with a leg of his own special seasonal tour, and this was achieved with the assistance of promoter Kevin Madigan.

At a hectic time of year, it would’ve been easy to have missed what I can only describe as a high-quality and entertaining concert, comprising a 12-piece string ensemble and pianist, which was set on a beautifully decorated stage, and with an unassuming elegance in attire and manner.

In a style reminiscent of Andre Rieu, the programme was a smooth blend of well-known classical tunes and festive favourites. Yet, despite its toe-tapping hand-clapping nature, which included a variety of carols and songs, as well as Austrian polka dances and waltzes, it still retained an original feel to it.

Endearingly compèred by Vladimir himself, he introduced the members of the group one by one. The majority of them are in his immediate family, a dynasty of musicians originally hailing from Bratislava, but now working all over the world.

And so this tour, now in its ninth year, ensures his family all get together annually.

Many of the ensemble performed solos, including his siblings and both his parents. His violinist Father, Alexander, showcased a traditional Eastern European melody. His sister, Olga, played from memory a spellbinding Grieg piano concerto.

The Jablokov Family were joined on stage by tenor Sean Costello and soprano Claudia Boyle, who Vladimir had met during time in Ireland. These two talented singers oozed fun and charm.

A local element came in the shape of Anagh Coar Primary School and Peel Cathedral Singers, who gave a pleasant introduction as support artistes, each with a Yuletide selection. Peel Cathedral Singers additionally provided sultry harmonies to a finale of ’Oh, Holy Night’, involving all participants.

’Vladimir’s Viennese Christmas’ hopes to return to the island next year. I would highly recommend going to what would be a perfect start to next year’s Christmas.
