Hector Duff is to be recognised by his own village.

The war hero, former police officer and driving instructor, will be given the Crosh Pobble Chonnaghyn or Onchan Community Cross Award next month.

The cross is awarded every two years to a recipient selected from the numerous people in Onchan who have added to the quality of life in the district.

The award is in recognition of their publicly spirited work within the community.

Hector Duff, who will be 99 this year, has already been given the Tynwald Honour, British Empire Medal and the Military Medal.

A press statement from Onchan Commissioners says: ’He is the epitome of selflessness and endeavour in working for the greater good of the community, inspiring young and old alike in ensuring that for generations to come the supreme sacrifice made by those in two world wars will never be forgotten.’
