A number of events around the island will commemorate VJ day this weekend.
Victory over Japan Day is the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end on August 15 1945.
In Ramsey, the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion will be a wreath laying at the town’s war memorial with a bugler in attendance from 11am.
On Sunday the branch is hosting a street party on Parliament Street, around the old courthouse, from 1pm onwards.
The event will include free children’s rides, sandwiches and drinks. In additions there will be various entertainment including a tribute to Forces’ sweetheart Vera Lynn.
In Peel and Douglas bell ringers will be ringing the 12 bells of St George’s, Douglas, and the eight bells of Peel Cathedral at 11am to mark the 75th anniversary.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions elsewhere, it is believed that only Douglas and Peel will be marking this event with full bands of ringers in the British Isles.
On Sunday morning at 11am, a service at St Peter’s Church in Onchan will be devoted to the 75th anniversary and instead of a sermon, the Captain of the Parish, Peter Kelly, himself the son of a former Japanese POW, will give an address.
Mr Kelly’s address will relate to the village of Onchan during the war years, VE Day and VJ Day Celebrations in Onchan and details of the sons of Onchan still held by the Japanese at the end of the war.
Friends of Castletown Railway Station are holding a VE/VJ day celebrations on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm.
The station will be dressed in 1940’s period and all attending will hopefully be dressed likewise, and organisers have arranged on the day for vintage vehicles from the era to be displayed,.
Isle of Man home guard re enactment society will also be on duty and there’s a display from Ivor Ramsden and the military museum. The ladies of the WI have a stall with jams and preserves adding to a "make do and mend" campaign and a farmers market "dig for victory" there will be tea and cakes for sale.
Funds raised on the day will go towards continuing works being carried out to enhance the visitor experience, "a step back in time" at the station.
