A walk from coast to coast is set to raise money for a charity.

The Manx Blind Welfare Society’s walk, on Sunday, September 8, follows the old railway line between Douglas and Peel, which is now known as the Heritage Trail.

A shorter route starts at St John’s.

The full-distance walk will start at 1.30pm with check-in from 12.30pm at the Department of Infrastructure car park on South Quay - opposite the offices of the Skywind Group, the principal sponsor of the event.

Check-in for the shorter three-mile route will open from 2.45pm at the village school car park in St John’s, with walkers expected to set off at 3.30pm.

Organisers are hoping to top last year’s number of entrants and raise more funds for the charity.

The Manx Blind Welfare Society’s events organiser, Debbie Thomson, said: ’We’re really excited to be bringing this community event back for another year.

’The 2018 walk proved extremely popular and was an afternoon full of enjoyment and community spirit - we just knew we had to repeat it.

’As the Heritage Trail winds its way along, walkers will have the opportunity to savour the stunning countryside views.

’There will be marshals placed along the route to direct and offer support to participants, as well as water stations to keep everyone hydrated!

’I’ve no doubt it will be one of the highlights of Vision Awareness Week.

’I’d encourage everyone to gather friends, family members, colleagues and even pooches to come on down and get involved.

’If you don’t fancy the walk but would like to get involved, we’re also on the lookout for volunteers to help out on the day.’

Vision Awareness Week 2019, which runs from September 8 to 13, will take on the theme of ’Making the Island Accessible’, with a different focus every day on how simple changes can be made to public places to help blind and visually impaired people.
