Wallabies Gone Wild recent community event, the Wallaby Wander, saw Team Ruddick win an incredible cash prize of £250.

On Saturday, July 20, we invited people to join us for a one-day wallaby hunt with a bit of a twist.

Ten of our large wallabies, from Rue Point to Port Erin, and others in between, were in possession of a number. The challenge for teams was to plot the most efficient route to collect the numbers from around the island and get back to base in the quickest time possible.

Further to this, the challengers had to correctly add up the numbers they’d collected and prove their whole team had been to the necessary wallabies by taking selfies.

The event started and finished at the picturesque Ballannette in Baldrine, which was kindly made available to us by our presenting partners, SCS Ltd.

Once the challenge was revealed to the teams, it became apparent to us that this was going to be a very competitive event, and the competitors who saw each other on the road reported there was a lot of friendly rivalry.

One team told us they didn’t even dare to stop and eat the picnic lunch that they had taken time to pack for fear of losing valuable time. Another team blamed their need to make a toilet pit stop for them missing out on the top spot.

The husband and wife team of Kat and Ian Ruddick claimed the prize money by finishing in first position, with a very respectable time of three hours and 10 minutes.

There was a tie for second and third place with both teams finishing in a time of three hours and thirteen minutes.

Wallaby goodies were also given to the team who took the best selfie.

The star prize was presented to Team Ruddick by Hospice Isle of Man board member Bob Fayle.

The Wallaby Wander was another way for us to celebrate the success of Wallabies Gone Wild and all the hard work put in by artists, sponsors, schools and community groups.

It was lovely to see families and groups of friends spending time together and we thank all competitors for taking part and for the positive feedback they gave us after the event.

All proceeds from the Wallaby Wander go to Hospice Isle of Man to help us support people in our community to live well, their way until the end of their life.
