Established more than 130 years ago to research and care for the ancient monuments of the island and now an Isle of Man registered charity, over the years, the Manx Museum and National Trust has added museum, library, archive, online and art gallery functions to its remit, and in the 1950s formally became the National Trust for the Isle of Man.

The charity has a statutory remit to protect, promote and make accessible the island’s natural and cultural heritage.

This includes operating and maintaining 11 heritage visitor sites, caring for thousands of acres of natural heritage landscape, guardianship of hundreds of ancient monuments and the conservation and display of a collection of heritage objects and archives held in trust for the nation.

The board of trustees is responsible for the governance of Manx Museum and National Trust’s activities,.

The trustee roles are unpaid public appointments and trustees serve a maximum term of five years. They also act as ambassadors for the charity.
