The Ronaldsway Met Office has issued two weather warnings for the whole of the island for the next 24 hours.

An active weather system will spread across the island from the west later tonight bringing a wet and windy spell of weather for much of Tuesday.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for severe gales and heavy rain and an amber warning has been issued for coastal overtopping.

The amber warning is issued for 8am on Tuesday until just after midnight on Wednesday morning with the Met Office warning of ’a significant amount of sea water and debris being brought onshore’.

Areas most likely to be affected are Shore Road in Rushen, Castletown Promenade, the northern end of Douglas Promenade as well as Laxey and Ramsey promenades.

Around mid-afternoon on Tuesday the wind will turn to the west or west-southwest and ease slightly, although still remaining strong to gale force, with slight to moderate overtopping of waves then likely to affect Fenella Beach in Peel and the eastern end of Peel Promenade for the evening’s high tide at about 10.15pm.

The south to south-southwesterly wind will increase to gale or severe gale force by dawn on Tuesday with gusts of 50-60mph expected quite widely across the island but with up to 65 mph possible in more exposed spots with the wind expected to peak between 6am to 2pm.

The wind will then quickly veer west or west-southwesterly around mid-afternoon on Tuesday, easing slightly, although still remaining strong to gale force with gusts 40-45mph.

Rain will spread across the island during the early hours on Tuesday morning turning heavy for a time around dawn, and again into the afternoon before gradually clearing eastwards toward dusk.

Rainfall amounts are expected to be 20-30mm quite widely across the island, but with up to 60mm possible over the hills.

This period of wet and windy weather will lead to a risk of some minor damage, travel disruption and localised flooding, with Tuesday morning’s commute expected to be particularly affected.
