Almost 5,800 bottles of water were sold to students in the island’s five state secondary schools in just one week, figures released in Tynwald show.
Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse asked how many bottles of water were sold in the week following TT week in 2018 and 2019 in each high school.
Education Minister Graham Cregeen replied in a written answer that between June 11 and 15 last year a total of 6,660 bottles of still or flavoured water were sold in the five schools.
Between June 10 and 14 this year, the figure was 5,771.
In May, Ramsey Grammar School revealed it generates £20,000 a year in revenue just from selling water in plastic bottles and petitioned the Chief Minister for financial support so that it could afford to stop selling single-use plastic bottled water in its canteen.
Government is taking action to reduce single use plastics within the public service. Its aim is to eliminate all unnecessary single use plastics across government by 2021.
