A ’wheel and walk’ event to raise funds for the MS Society at the NSC cycle track last Saturday, April 28, was a success.

Society branch chairman Derek Patience said: ’It went very well and we were very lucky with the weather. There was an excellent turnout with 95 people taking part, a good number of which have MS, and they were greatly supported by family and friends.’

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than £8,000 for the local branch and organisers are expecting this year’s total to be down on that, at around £5,000, although donations can still be made.

Funds go on providing support and services for everyone affected by the debilitating, often disabling, and still incurable condition.

As well as help with funding for various aids which help people with MS to remain safely in their homes, the MS Society funds seated exercise, yoga and Pilates classes and a full range of social events.

’Much of what we offer is practical or financial support, including the employment of a support officer with knowledge of MS who provides assistance, care and guidance where needed but we also know that many people with MS just want to get out and socialise with others,’ said Derek.

He thanked St John Ambulance, the NSC, Zurich for providing the marshals and a number of walkers, all the volunteers and all who provided sponsorship.

The society’s next event is a Zumba class at the main sports hall at the NSC from 2pm to 3pm on Saturday, May 5. Everyone is invited. There is no need to book, just turn up. The cost is £5.
