The UK is scheduled to leave the European Union at 11pm on March 29.
This has triggered a number of people and companies across the country to start stockpiling goods that they believe will be in short supply after Brexit.
Heathrow Airport is stockpiling imported security materials like rubber gloves in the event of a no-deal Brexit and there are concerns regarding medicine supplies in the UK. The island’s own healthcare bodies have plans in place in the event of a worst case scenario.
We asked island residents if they were doing the same.
Chris Taggart, 65, Onchan, said: ’I’m not stockpiling. Brexit will get sorted one way or another. I don’t think at this moment there’s any need for stockpiling.
’I only saw an article on the telly this morning about stockpiling.’
When asked if he would stockpile anything in particular, he replied ’chocolate’.
Ray Holmes, 63, from Douglas, has been stockpiling goods for six months now.
’I’m stockpiling pasta, tinned goods like mackerel and tuna. It needs to have a shelf life of around six months.’
He added that the freezers in his garage are full of food.
’What we’ve got to think about is how self-sufficient are we as an island.
’We have milk, cheese, meat... what about the imported stuff?’
He explained that stockpiling is a ’just in case’ procedure.
’The UK is going to look after itself first after Brexit,’ he said. ’My sister’s in the UK and she’s doing the same - it’s something as a family we have decided to do.
’Nearer the time of Brexit everyone will get a better understanding of what’s going to happen and then people will start to make decisions.’
Sylvia Hall, 66, from Peel, believes stockpiling is ’a complete waste of time’.
’It’s absolutely pointless panicking over nothing. There’s no reason to worry whatsoever - it’s all "Project Fear", as they say.
’I think there will be a Brexit deal made. I don’t know anybody who is stockpiling.
’We’re not going to run out of food, for one thing we have people who produce this locally,’ she said.
Ramsey resident, Andy Lee, 43, said: ’I think it’s naive to think there won’t be a deal. The world’s not going to end, is it?
’Stockpiling is really quite juvenile I think.’
He said that despite all the coverage on Brexit in the news, there is still little understanding of it.
’I don’t understand it to the extent that I would like to know. What’s at risk? Are we talking about basic food items? What about fuel - what do we stockpile?
’It’s border frustration and everyone is getting sick of Brexit. This notion of no deal is a huge issue of scare-mongering.’
Ealish Pope, 17, Peel, said she is not stockpiling ahead of Brexit.
’I’m not sure what’s going to be taken away and what we can and cannot get after Brexit.’
She admitted that she doesn’t talk about Brexit with friends or family, but does have one particular concern about the issue.
’The one thing I do think about it is that I go away quite a bit to Europe, so I don’t know how Brexit’s going to affect that,’ she said.
