Cultural historian Charles Guard explores some of the more unusual aspects of the island’s landscape in Culture Vannin’s recent release, Wonders of Mann.

The hidden explosives factory at Cornaa, an old chemical works below Maughold Head, secret vaults and tunnels, unusual natural features, and remarkable man-made structures from the 10th to the 21st century all feature in the lavishly illustrated 116-page softback book.

There’s stunning photography, most of which has been specially commissioned for the book.

From the Calf of Man to the Point of Ayre the photographs, many of which have been taken from drones, provide a completely new perspective on the buildings and the island’s landscape.

They are accompanied by informative text which brings to life the stories behind these remarkable sites.

Wonders of Mann is available from all good book and museum shops, and from Culture Vannin directly during office hours at Fairfield House, Main Road, St John’s, just opposite Tynwald Hill.

It has a recommended retail price of £12.
