No one part of the Isle of Man ever stays the same.
Year after year our island goes through a metamorphosis with the changing seasons and each one of us sees the Isle of Man in a different light.
From the Ayres on a warm spring evening to Peel breakwater on a rainy day, each of us has a favourite place and time of year.
Spring is about rebirth. As the frost breaks and earthy browns are slowly replaced with greens and pinks in the forests, flowerbed and meadows, the island starts to come alive.
When the warmer weather does come it transforms our plantations, glens and woodlands. The beaches and coastline become hives of activity for locals and tourists. It’s a time to rediscover the spots which fill your memories from last year.
Autumn’s entrance is so subtle you might miss it if not for the increase in leaves underfoot or the slight chill in the air.
But slowly and surely the landscape becomes awash with red, orange and brown, painting a stark but equally beautiful picture of our island.
Winter comes with the first frost. As the nights become longer again and a log fire becomes more appealing, our relationship with the outdoors changes once again, becoming a time for wellies and warm coats, bonfires, superstitions and celebration.
And then it all begins again with only our memories and our photos to help us remember the year that’s just passed.
Year of Our Island wants you to share your story of 2018.
Earlier in the year we launched the Year of Our Island Photography Competition and encouraged budding photographers to submit their photos which celebrate the people and places that make our island a special place to live and work.
With the year drawing to a close we think that it’s the perfect time to look back at the memories you’ve captured in photographic form throughout 2018 and share them with us.
Whether you’re a smartphone snapper or a seasoned pro, our competition is free and open to everyone.
Shortlisted shots will feature in an exhibition at the start of 2019 and entrants have the chance to win up to £250.
To enter, go online to ourisland.im and fill in the application form. The deadline for applications is Monday, December 31.
