A group of young actors, aged between seven and 14, were the stars of the show at a recent run of shows in Ramsey.
The northern-based community theatre group, Cloideryn, performed the Rogers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music at St Paul’s Hall, Ramsey, over the last two weekends, and the children who made up the singing Von Trapp family impressed all who came to see the show with their talents.
The children featured seven-year-old Olivia Johnston as Gretl, Mariella Mazzone-Pollard, seven, as Marta, nine-year-old Noah Yardley as Kurt, Sienna Callister, 10, as Brigitta, Ben Corkill, 14, as Freidrich, Victoria Johnson, 13, as Louisa and a confident performance from 13 year-old Lexi Forbes as the elder sister Leisl.
They were led by an impressive island debut performance by newcomer Rosie Corona as Maria, who led the children through one singing set piece after another.
Rosie is blessed with a wonderful voice, and managed to fill the hall with her powerful voice, initially appearing from the rear of the hall to give a note-perfect version of ’The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music’.
Alongside her, the children all brought a lot of confidence and energy to their individual roles and, from the youngest upwards, they sang their hearts out through the well-known and classic songs of the show, such as ’Do-re-mi’, ’So Long, Farewell’ and ’A Few of my Favourite Things’.
The cast was joined at the last minute by Magnus Black, who stepped into the role of Rolf, and shared the song ’16 Going on 17’ with Lexi.
Magnus only joined the show with two weeks to go before the opening night, and his first performance with Cloideryn came on the back of his star role in the Ramsey Grammar School show ’We Will Rock You’.
Nine-year-old Lola Gawne also sang an impressive solo number, with ’The Lonely Goatherd’.
It was impossible not to enjoy such a display of enthusiasm and energy from such a young and talented group.
The children were ably supported by a cast of Cloioderyn regulars, including Rhys Yardley as the stern captain Von Trapp, who eventually warms to Maria, Chris Lowden as the captain of the local band of Brownshirt officials and Andy Done played the scheming impressario Max Detweller.
Director Carol Fraser, producer Heather Ruffino and music director Marilyn Cannell created a fun and enjoyable show, which put a great deal of emphasis on the younger members of their small community group, and showed how talented and capable they can be when thrust to the centre of the stage.
Cloideryn’s next show will be their pantomime, Red Riding Hood, which takes place in March 2019.
Heather said that they are looking for new members to their group, and if anyone would like to take part, contact 437904 for more details.
