Like many other Manxies, I had the immense pleasure of watching one of our own clinch Commonwealth Games gold in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon.

While Isle of Man Today’s man on the ground, Andy Dalrymple, was inside the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow working hard, I was glued to my screen as commentator Rob Hatch exclaimed: ‘The small rock in the Irish Sea now rules the Commonwealth!’

Boy, that was spine-tingling. And well worth the shout.

Bocky, aided by team-mate Ben Swift, lapped the field several times while collecting valuable points in the intermediate sprints.

He finished three points ahead of cycling powerhouses New Zealand and Australia to take his place on the top step of the podium.

Not bad, huh?

He now follows Peter Buckley, Nigel Kelly and Sir Mark Cavendish in winning Commonwealth Games gold for the Isle of Man, and is the first to do so since Cav’s triumph in 2006.

That is some company to keep.

But the victory also took me back to 2012. I was just a lad making the jump from primary to secondary school when Peter Kennaugh won Olympic gold in London.

The Isle of Man Post Office painted the post box outside Onchan Post Office gold to celebrate his achievement, while the telephone box at the top of Royal Avenue was also given the golden treatment.

Meanwhile, those of us in the newsroom seem to remember Cav getting a ride on an open-top horse tram.

The island does not win gold very often. But when it does, surely we should make sure those achievements are properly commemorated.

As a Marown man myself, I would love to see something in Glen Vine, or somewhere else in the parish, recognising what Bocky has achieved.

I do not know whether that responsibility lies with the commissioners, government, the Post Office or someone else.

But I hope somebody is already thinking about it.

The moment was awesome. It deserves to be remembered.
