Jordan Cain sealed the 10 kilometre class of Western AC’s trail run series with a resounding victory in the fourth and final round on Sunday.
One of the island’s leading crown green bowlers, the 30-year-old Castletown man led the final race from Peel to St John’s and back from start to finish.
Romping into an early lead, he completed the first mile in a very handy 5m 39s - a little quicker than he needed on a day when the entry was a lot leaner than previous rounds.
The main issue was the number of runners away at the Lancashire cross-country champs, but then there were an unknown number of people isolating after contracting Covid and, to a lesser extent, the clash with the winter walk at the NSC.
It was one of those strange days when there appeared to be no particular assistance from the wind, but plenty of resistance in runners’ faces.
Cain’s time was 40 seconds slower than his best of 35m 12s in December, but under the circumstances he was pleased to stay under 36 minutes.
New name Daniel O’Connor made his mark when finishing runner-up, while Roy Crellin also did well to dip under 25 minutes.
After making significant improvements as an athlete over the two-year Covid period, music teacher Katie Lawrence rounded off the league with fourth place on the day and first woman in 51.30, beating Jayne Farquhar by more than three minutes. Third-placed Jan Cooil won the women’s title overall.
For the first time in the short history of the series, a female won a round of the 5km league outright on the day.
Swimming coach Berti Cain of Kirk Michael led throughout to complete the distance in under 24 minutes to enjoy a clear win over namesakes (but no relations) Ann Cain and Sharon Cain.
First male was 70-something Alan Pilling of Ramsey in fifth place overall, behind Monica George, with former all-rounder Phil Cain struggling home nursing a calf injury to grab enough league points to finish second overall.
The series winners were Harry Stennett and Maddy McMullan of Northern AC, who were en-route home from the previous day’s Lancashire champs.
Leighton Curphey showed his potential with a clear win in the under-nines 1,000 metre race on the initial stretch of the former railway line route past Peel’s power station and back.
He went sub-four minutes to comfortably beat Peel’s own Odin Bignell, Xenia Munoz-Fite and Poppy Killey.
The two-lap 2km race for over-nines went to Bernat Munoz-Fite from Darcy Killey.
