Castletown A are aiming to continue their winning start to the fledgling PwC Women’s Premier League hockey season this weekend.
After surprising everyone on the opening Saturday of the campaign, Town take on a Ramsey side comprehensively beaten by a strong Valkyrs side last weekend with the aim of earning another two points.
In previous years this would have been a Ramsey win but Castletown have shown that they can surprise you if underestimated for even a second.
Vikings open their account this week when taking on a Bacchas A side that lost to Castletown last weekend. Bacchas have strengthened well during the Christmas break and it may take a couple of weeks to gel properly.
Vikings, however, will want to continue their long unbeaten run and are favourites to do so here.
In the PwC Men’s Premier League, Bacchas A will look to yet again increase their goal difference at the top of the table against a plucky Vikings B side who managed to beat a strong Castletown last weekend.
Vikings A will be looking to improve against Ramsey A, having dominated against Valkyrs on the opening day without really threatening until the second half. Vikings know they have to improve quickly in order to keep up with Bacchas.
The final game of the Men’s Premier League sees Castletown A take on Valkyrs A. This could be a close game if Castletown can do more with their chances on goal, but Valkyrs are favourites to come away with the win.
Women’s Division One sees Valkyrs B take on Harlequins A, with the latter edging the favourites tag, while Bacchas B are looking to earn their first points of the season against Vikings B who also hope to open their account this weekend.
Men’s Division One has an early favourite in the shape of Saracens A who will be confident of beating Vikings C.
Ramsey B and Bacchas B go head-to-head and, after Bacchas were unlucky not to earn points last week, they will be the favourites to earn both points this Saturday.
Elsewhere, Harlequins A will carry their good form from last weekend into their game with Valkyrs B.
Women’s Division Two sees Castletown B take on Ramsey B and, with the latter playing their first game of the season, it is a bit unclear which way this could go.
Bacchas C take on Saracens B with neither side scoring in the opening game so this is going to be a close game.
In the Men’s Division Two battle, Saracens B take on Castletown B in the big southern derby which is also a repeat of the women’s fixture last week. Unlike the women’s match though, this fixture has some history for being bad-tempered with generally poor attitudes.
Hopefully the men’s sides can take a leaf out of the women’s book and provide an entertaining and competitive game without letting it boil over.
In the other fixture in Men’s Division Two, Bacchas C are hoping to prevent Harlequins B earning victory in a game that Bacchas will start as underdogs.
