Mark Cavendish’s start to the 2021 cycling season began in frustrating fashion in Spain over the weekend.

The Manxman was competing in the Clasica de Almeria one-day race in the southeast of the country, with riders tackling a 183.3-kilometre route round Andalusia.

The race marked Cav’s second debut for Deceuninck-Quick Step, having returned to the Belgian team in the off-season after previously riding for them between 2013-2015.

Unfortunately, a puncture in the closing stages put Cavendish out of contention in Sunday’s race.

He eventually finished 94th some one minute 36 seconds behind winner Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka-Assos).

Cavendish’s team-mate Florias Senechal was second in the 43-strong bunch sprint for the chequered flag.

Fellow Manxman Mark Christian had originally been on the start list for the Spanish race for his new team EOLO-Kometa. but the 30-year-old was ultimately a non-starter.
