Nick Colburn would have struggled to walk the length of Hill Street last Christmas after breaking an ankle in a training accident.

But, largely recovered, he romped to victory in a slightly extended Douglas Santa Dash last Wednesday.

Sponsored for the first time by Nedgroup Investments Ltd, the race started from Hill Street, close to the company’s Isle of Man office, thus extending the earlier course by approximately 300 metres.

The race descended Prospect Hill, covering the length of Victoria Street before swinging left onto Loch Promenade and finishing on Finch Road.

The approximate distance was a little more than one mile.

Orran Smith set the early pace, soon overhauling fast-starting Steven Quayle and Jamie Newton on the descent past Prospect Hotel.

Colburn caught Smith up as they neared Jubilee Clock and took the lead as they turned onto the promenade.

’I could hear Jamie breathing hard behind me all the way along, so it was fairly close,’ said Nick.

’As we went round Sam Webb’s I kicked hard up the hill and played all my cards. There was still a long way to go but I knew that would be my only chance.’

’Luckily it worked and I held him off by a few seconds.’

He completed the lap, at the side of the Tynwald building, in a time of five minutes 01 second - three seconds clear of a tiring Newton.

Smith was another six seconds adrift, followed by Chris Looney, Quayle, Neil Brogan and Chris Honour.

There was also a close contest for the women’s honours with Carly Craig edging out Becky Watterson by four seconds to finish 10th and 11th in a total field of 232 finishers.

Natasha Mckenzie, Niamh Goddard and Carol Brogan also went under seven minutes.

The charity event raised funds for The Children’s Centre and Reach IoM.
