The weekend will see the cricket season’s disjointed start continue, but nevertheless there is still lots of activity at all levels.
The excellent Manx Youth Games finale takes place on Saturday at Cronkbourne CC with around 100 children set to take part in the day.
It promises to be a great day for all those youngsters who have been attending the sessions for the last 12 weeks.
Cronkbourne do an excellent job hosting this and an enjoyable day is sure to be had by all those participating.
The Premier League also starts this week, but the fixtures are being effected by volunteers assisting at the MYG.
In Saturday’s sole Premier League game Ramsey will host the Isle of Man Cricket Association’s Development XI.
Both sides managed positive results in the Blincoe Cup last week and will be looking to carry that form into the league competition.
Both teams look a good balance of youth and experience and some good cricket will be played.
There are two fixtures on Sunday with Castletown travelling to Cronkbourne in the Premier League.
This should be a real indicator of where the league silverware may be headed this year.
Early season form and availability has a huge influence on the season and although the campaign has been extended to 15 games this year it will still set a benchmark.
Castletown have retained their side of last year but have also added 2016’s top run scorer George Burrows who will open the batting and keep wicket to add more strength to their squad.
Cronkbourne will be without the services of some of their senior players from last year with Matt Ansell returning to university as an example.
The Tromode club will be looking at its younger players to take responsibility and support the likes of Carl Mellors and Max Stokoe.
Sunday also sees the start of the juniors’ Super Twos season.
Those players selected in the Isle of Man under-12 and u14 excellence squads are split into two teams to provide some intra-squad 40-over games to prepare them for their festivals in Bromsgrove later in the year.
The games will also act as a benchmark of their development in the island over the winter months.
This fixture will be played at Peel & St John’s Mullen-e-Cloie ground.
Next week sees the midweek leagues begin for both senior and junior sides.
