Fresh from their win against Edgewater Turkeys the previous week, Cavs were quick to take a lead with outside shooting from Phil Evans and Mike Lewis helping them to edge ahead.
Inside work from Norbert Bjote and a three-pointer by Marco Garmino kept Douglas in contention but it was Cavaliers who led at the end of the first quarter 9-8.
Cavs continued to run the floor in the second quarter, Evans hitting another three and was joined by Sergio Arboleya, while Dave Minay took up residence inside the paint to pick-up points and draw fouls out of the defence.
Douglas managed to keep themselves on the board with some nice fast breaks from Jim Manuel but struggled in defence and increasingly lagged on offence. As half-time arrived, Cavaliers were in control and had extended their lead, 27-21.
The second half was an entirely different game though, as Douglas exploded from the start with a pressure defence that led to plenty of steals, with Amu Hikwa working the inside to single-handedly overturn Cavs’ six-point lead.
That was only the start of the success for Douglas though and, in one of the most impressive offensive performances of recent times, Ott Krussell hit four swish three-pointers and a quick lay-up to fire Douglas into the lead, further extended by another three-pointer from Garmino.
Looking increasingly tired and frustrated, Cavaliers struggled for the rest of the game, Douglas punishing every offensive mistake and building their momentum to take control.
Further baskets from Krussell, Hikwa and Manuel kept them well ahead and, as the final buzzer sounded, Douglas were riding high with a 20-point win, 44-64.
l The second game of the evening saw an energetic competition between PwC Hoops and Wolves.
Hoops continued to show their impressive form from recent games with quick ball movement and an active defence that put Wolves under some pressure.
Daniella Kravela dominated the scoring for Hoops in the first half, taking full advantage of the opportunities created by her team’s offensive movement.
At the end of the first half, it was a close game, 29-25 to Wolves.
The second half saw Wolves settle more into their game, pressure defence from Michael Connolly, Michael Pardoe and Ben Campbell disrupting the Hoops offence and providing some nice chances for Wolves to run the break.
The inside game was dominated by Jack Murray who scooped up boards on both ends of the floor, converting on the offensive boards to help extend the Wolves lead.
The play of the evening was undoubtedly a fast break by rookie Oscar Lace: powering down the court with Hoops defence right behind, he drew them in with a run to the basket only to throw a behind-the-back pass to team-mate Ross Wilson who was left wide open to score the lay-up.
With the final buzzer, Wolves ultimately took the win 55-41.
l The final game of the night was a battle between up-and-coming Eagles and the veteran Forget Me Not Jets side.
Jack Elliot and Ivan Hufana continued their impressive recent form, racking up points and helping to keep Eagles within a point of Jets during the first quarter.
The experience of the Jets team took the day though, with Wayne Mears, Matthew Jennings and Jake Glover all racking up points and at the end of the game Jets were soaring high, 76-42 winners.
l This Thursday will see all senior teams in action from 7-10pm in the NSC Main Hall. As always spectators are welcome to attend, with seating available courtside for all those wanting to see the action.
